Whether you’re planning on a small-scale renovation project or a large construction job, chances are you’ll generate a substantial amount of debris and trash. This is why many homeowners and contractors turn to junk removal companies to get rid of their unwanted materials. But before you can select the right junk hauler for your needs, it’s important to understand what size dumpster you’ll need to tackle your debris removal project. Read on for several tips that should help you choose the perfect debris and trash pickup container size.
BULK TRASH
Bulk waste includes items that cannot be placed in the garbage tote, such as furniture (couch, chair, dresser, etc), mattresses (with box springs) and carpet in 4 foot sections, bundles of wood and brush and yard waste in biodegradable paper bags. Please limit bulk trash to 2 pieces per collection day. Yard waste (leaves, grass clippings, limbs, etc) should be placed in the tote and is collected weekly.
Hazardous Materials
Many seemingly safe products contain substances and chemicals that are considered hazardous. These can include batteries, paints, cleaners, pharmaceuticals and electronics. These types of materials are not accepted in the regular trash or at a professional junk hauler’s disposal facilities. Luckily, the City offers a FREE drop-off location for hazardous waste, located at 1700 S Old Kings Road. It is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
TRASH & DEBRIS
The Department of Sanitation (DSNY) sweeps most commercial and residential streets each week. This helps to reduce litter, rat infestations and shattered glass that can harm or injure drivers. It is also a good way to keep your street looking nice.
When placing debris at the curb for pickup, make sure it is securely bagged and separated. Different trucks collect different materials. Piles of brush or metal should be set out separately from piles of wood, drywall, mattresses and yard waste. Also, do not place trash or other debris in or on any moving vehicle. This is considered littering, and violators may be subject to a $250 fine.
